Kras (Karst) Region

In the southwestern portion of Slovenia is the Kras Region. This area received its name due to its unique geography. We visited this area and found the Skocjanski Jame (Cave), one of 7,000 caves in Slovenia, was the main attraction.

The original entrance to the cave above right) is now used as the exit - a new entrance was created to ease access for visitors. The interiorconsists of 11 interconnected caves, collapse dolines, natural bridges and sink holes. The Reka-Velka voda river running through the caves. One of the caves has a central chamber that is more than 135 meters (443 feet) high. It was very spectacular. Unfortunately photography inside the cave is not permitted.

The view as we exited the cave was qutie spectacular, as can be seen in the photograph, above left.

We then went for a bit of a walk up to a view point where we could see more of the area where the cave is located. The original entrance is seen in the right hand side of the picture and the river is entering the cave in the lower left portion of the photograph.
